This Monday started our first week back at work after the Christmas break. We actually got back home Sunday afternoon, but I’ve been trying to catch up on sleep and work so I haven’t had much energy for writing. I managed to process some vacation photos and they are in this Flickr set. I have at least another 100 that need some processing that I hope to get to this weekend. The vacation was awesome and I hope to write about it when I’m done processing and organizing the photos this weekend.
Work is off to a great start this year with no shortage of things to do. This year promises to be even more fun than the last.
One of our first tasks will be getting VEXRobotics up and running on the new CMS and Cart. Hexbug.com has been a good trial and we’re ready to move on to some bigger and more complex product lines. I’ve really enjoyed this challenge and it is exciting to see a product we developed being used by customers and generating real revenue.
The VEX World Championship is in Dallas this year (4/30-5/02). I will be there taking photos and helping out where I can. I hope some of my San Antonio friends can come up for a day or two. Contact me if you are interested in volunteering and I’ll get you in touch with the right people.
I’m still writing for GeekDad and have set a goal of 8 posts per month. I’ve been averaging closer to 6 or 7 so it isn’t a large stretch, but it will require a bit more discipline on when and how I write. If you have any sufficiently geeky, dad related topics you’d like covered, please send them my way.
There are plenty more things to be excited about, but for now I think I’d better sleep. Drop a comment below to let me know what you’re looking forward to this year.
We’re having our company Christmas party in The Bahamas this year, so we’ll be off-line for about a week. First stop is Galveston for xmas with my family and to drop the kids off with my sister, then we hit the beach in Nassau. I’ll take lots of pictures, but don’t count on me uploading any until we get back.
Have a happy winter festival of your choosing and may the next year be full of fun and exciting adventures!
For anyone who’s interested, we’ll be staying at the Breezes Bahamas resort and on New Years Day we’ll be taking an all day island cruise with a stop at Rose Island.
As if the show wasn’t intense enough, it appears they are kicking it up a notch or two for the final season. There are a lot of cool vids, but the new ones (to me anyway) are linked here. Poke around in the folders on the right for some humorous videos titled “Catch the Frak Up!”
Mark January 16th on the calendar, we’re in for a wild trip.
As many of you know I’ve been dumping a lot of time into getting the backend of HEXBUG.com up and working. Brandon and Brian did all the layout and graphics work up front, so give them the credit for making it look awesome.
We’ve been live now for a week, and we are very happy with the statistics. Magento’s blog quoted me after I let them know some of the numbers we’ve seen. In summary, visits have jumped over 200%, pageviews almost 300% and sales conversions are 1.5% and climbing.
In other news, Magento and Rackspace (my former employer) have publicised a partnership. I assume this means some of the Rackspace techs will be trained on installing and setting up Magento. It is cool that there is another source for Magento hosting.
I’m eager to get started on VEX Robotics next. Since we’re putting a lot of eggs in the Magento basket I’d love to see them do well and continue improving the product.
What are the odds that we can get 4 different angles of this same event on youtube? Do you think it was a hoax, or setup? My guess is that a number of people saw the guys moving the cable roll upstairs and figured they had a good chance of catching a fail.

More after the jump.

Since I started writing for GeekDad I have been getting a very odd assortment of spam, press releases, and product pitches. Significantly less than half of those actually pertain to being a Geek, or Dad.
These are the “unsubscribe” instructions from an email promoting the book Scratch Beginnings, which looks interesting, but again, doesn’t really pertain to being a Geek, or Dad, let alone both.
P.P.S. If you would like to unsubscribe from the one mass email that I send out whenever my work gets picked up by a publisher, simply reply to this email and type BreaKER BrEAker 1-9, the EaglE hAS leFt the nEst in the subject line. CAPS sensitive.
I’ll be heading down to Galveston in a week or so to help family clean up. If you are in the area and want to sweat your ass off in a mold and mud filled house, gimme a holler. I can hook you up.
