Being amazed at how fantastic the HD transfer of Fellowship of the Ring looked, I decided to compare it to the transfer on the DVD. Now, the DVD transfer is among the best you can find on DVD, so this really is comparing the respective creams of the crops.

Of course, this brings up the HD DVD vs Blu-Ray debate. Right now my money is on HD DVD because of the cost of the consumer level products.

The cheapest HD DVD player on Amazon is a Toshiba HD-A3 1080i for $180. The cheapest Blu-Ray player is the Samsung BD-P1000 for $399. Although I suggest for the money you get a PS3.

It appears though that the porn industry might be making the switch to Blu-Ray and that alone will be enough to negate the cost difference. Time of course will tell. Until then I'm satisfied with my $35 Standard Def DVD player.
