I'd consider $2k to be a bit much for even a well off hobbyist. I'll stick with the <a href="http://www.vexlabs.com/vex-products.shtml" rel="nofollow">Vex Robotics</a> products. Less computing power, but much more affordable. (full disclosure: I work for the company that produces Vex products.) Whoa, that’s way too much. The US price will be about $7,995 for a full-blown robot with the side panels and internal computer, DVD, speakers, camera, etc. In Australia, they are quoting about $10K.
